Reflectivity data is one of the basic products
available on the WSR-88D. Reflectivity shows where and how hard
it is raining or snowing, as well as precipitation intensity
trends and movement. In the accompanying image, blue/green (yellow/orange) colors represent light-to-moderate
(moderate-to-heavy) precipitation, while
red is heavy rainfall and possibly hail. Pink/purple colors (not
evident in this figure) represent large hail in a thunderstorm. In this
broad view image, a squall line and embedded bow echo were located
across southwest Indiana (left), with an axis of severe storms, including
supercells, across central Kentucky (right). Many severe storms occurred on
this day, including wind damage, large hail, and a few tornadoes. Forecasters at NWS Louisville
are trained to assess convective trends and signatures quickly in order to determine
those thunderstorms that are severe, and to issue timely and effective warnings and statements,
as needed. |
