The downlink antenna at NWS Louisville
is an integral part of the AWIPS communication system, i.e.,
the satellite broadcast network (SBN). This is a "receive-only"
antenna that ingests weather data signals from a satellite in
space. The satellite, which receives its data signals from a
master ground station, transmits signals to all field AWIPS sites
via each site's antenna, i.e., a point-to-multipoint satellite
communications network. Received signals are then automatically
sent to Louisville's AWIPS communication
processors for processing, and to the applications and data
servers for data manipulation, calculation, and storage. The
data then can be viewed at the AWIPS workstations. |
