This picture shows the front of the 7
AWIPS "racks" in the computer room at NWS Louisville.
These units perform many functions to transform signals received
by Louisville's downlink antenna
to viewable data at the AWIPS workstations.
Two of the racks are communications processors that receive and
process data signals from the antenna and from the WSR-88D Doppler
radar. Two others are applications servers that process data,
perform calculations, execute software, etc. Two more racks are
data servers for storage and recall of final data products. The
seventh rack is the Local
Data Acquisition and Dissemination System (LDADS) that allow local data sets to be ingested into AWIPS. |
