AWIPS Image: Communication and Data Processor and Storage Racks This picture shows the front of the 7 AWIPS "racks" in the computer room at NWS Louisville. These units perform many functions to transform signals received by Louisville's downlink antenna to viewable data at the AWIPS workstations. Two of the racks are communications processors that receive and process data signals from the antenna and from the WSR-88D Doppler radar. Two others are applications servers that process data, perform calculations, execute software, etc. Two more racks are data servers for storage and recall of final data products. The seventh rack is the Local Data Acquisition and Dissemination System (LDADS) that allow local data sets to be ingested into AWIPS.
